Washington, DC, September 19, 2022 — Today, MidCity executives were joined by Deputy Mayor of Planning and Economic Development John Falcicchio, and Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie at a ribbon cutting ceremony and tour marking the grand opening of their newest development, Big Sky Flats.

“Mayor Bowser is committed to creating and preserving affordable housing to ensure residents can live and thrive in the District,” said Deputy Mayor of Planning and Economic Development John Falcicchio. “Big Sky Flats is an example of how developers can incorporate initiatives like inclusionary zoning to support residents and help the city create more affordable housing and meet our goal of creating 36,000 new homes by 2025.”

Located at 1400 Montana Avenue NE in the Langdon neighborhood, the 108-unit multifamily apartment building is one of the first developments in the city to benefit from the Opportunity Zone Program. This policy encourages developers to invest in areas of the city that need economic development and revitalization.

The LEED Gold Multifamily Mid-Rise Certified development includes nine affordable inclusionary zoning units reserved for individuals making up to 60 percent of the area median income (AMI).

“Big Sky Flats is an example of how we bring balance to the housing environment, allowing people to live together in communities across all income levels,” said Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. “It is critical that any future development in Opportunity Zones in Ward 5 and across the city continue to make quality affordable housing an opportunity for all of our residents.”

The building boasts many amenities including a state-of-the-art fitness center, an onsite pet grooming station, a community den, sky lounge, a rooftop terrace with unobstructed views of the Capitol Building and Washington Monument, Amazon lockers, bike storage, Zipcar onsite, and is within close proximity of public transportation. Big Sky Flats not only provides much needed housing to Northeast DC, but it will also help spark new growth in one of DC’s most up and coming neighborhoods.

“MidCity is very proud to deliver this new development that adds to the wonderful fabric of the Langdon neighborhood and demonstrates our commitment to provide housing to meet all income levels,” said MidCity Executive Vice President Jamie Weinbaum.

Big Sky Flats is also the first apartment complex in DC to offer the Ori Pocket Office, a motorized office furniture system that expands and collapses to maximize the amount of living and office space, in some of the apartments. The innovative space-saving in-home office was recently highlighted in the Wall Street Journal.
